Tailored Biosecurity Framework for Non-Intensive Animal Farming Systems

Project summary

BIOFRAME is a project that aims to enhance biosecurity in non-intensive animal farming systems across Europe. These systems, while beneficial for animal welfare and the environment, are particularly vulnerable to disease outbreaks due to their not standardized characteristics and management practices. The project recognizes the lack of research and tailored solutions for biosecurity in these systems and aims to address this gap. BIOFRAME will co-develop a comprehensive and adaptable biosecurity improvement framework, including inputs from various stakeholders (farmers, veterinarians, policy makers, consumers).

This framework will be adaptable to the specific needs and resources of each farm, considering the farm's context and challenges. It will provide information on the benefit and economic impact of different biosecurity measures, empowering farmers to make informed decisions and implement effective practices. The project will also analyse existing legislation related to biosecurity in non-intensive farming systems, identifying -with input from farmers and vets - the challenges and opportunities for improvement.

Pilot studies will be conducted on selected farms to test the developed framework and assess its effectiveness in improving biosecurity practices. Additionally, an economic analysis will be performed to evaluate the impact of biosecurity measures on animal health, welfare, farm productivity, and sustainability. By involving stakeholders in the co-creation of solutions and providing them with tailored information and support, BIOFRAME aims to enhance biosecurity in non-intensive farming systems, leading to improved animal health and welfare, reduced disease spread, and increased economic sustainability. The project's findings will also inform policy recommendations and contribute to the development of effective and feasible biosecurity legal requirements for these systems.
